Apple is reportedly planning to release the second generation of its widely praised M1 chip in 2021 and 2022, according to a new report.
Earlier in the year, Apple began the transition from Intel-based Macs to new custom Silicon alternatives, offering genuinely impressive performance.
Alongside the launch of the M1 chip, Apple released three lower-end Macs, including a MacBook Air, a Mac mini, and a 13-inch MacBook Pro. Since then, many have been questioning how M1 will perform in more professional machines like the Mac Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro.
There’s no news yet on when we’ll see those models refreshed, but an active leaker has shared the news on a new chip that will power such devices.
According to LeaksApplePro, who has previously revealed accurate Apple information, Apple will release an M1X SoC chip, which will feature 12 CPU cores – eight for performance and four high-efficiency cores, and it will launch as the “powerplant” of the 2021 MacBook Pro 16-inch, meaning we’ll see it at some point next year.
“If you think M1 is fast, you haven’t seen M1X,” he said in a follow-up tweet.
The new M1X chip would offer extra performance cores and enable faster clocks, but we don’t know what this means for GPU. Right now, consumers can’t upgrade their GPU on the new Apple Silicon Macs, though this is likely to change in the years ahead as the technology adapts.
