Apple has reportedly scrapped plans to bring Touch ID back to iPhones.
Apple replaced Touch ID with Face ID with the launch of the iPhone X back in 2017, and since then, the company has replaced Touch ID across its iPhone range, apart from the budget iPhone SE. Apple has also begun switching the iPad over to Face ID or moving the Touch ID element to the power button in an effort to create a product line-up that’s all-screen, but there had been some speculation that we’d see a return of Touch ID.
According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has been testing the return of Touch ID but has scrapped plans. Mark Gurman believes Apple had been planning to add Touch ID to the power button as it has on the iPad mini and iPad Air, but that this is now unlikely to happen.
In recent years, we’ve heard rumors that Apple would bring Touch ID back to the iPhone in the form of an under-display fingerprint sensor. The idea was to offer two forms of biometrics on the iPhone to further improve security, but it appears Apple has now scrapped all plans to do so.
According to Gurman, Apple still could remove the Touch ID home button from future iPhone SE models and add a fingerprint scanner to the power button instead.
