Apple Reportedly to Switch iPhones to OLED Displays in 2018

Apple intends to start adopting OLED displays in place of the usual LCD panels for its iPhones in 2018, reports the Japanese news site Nikkei. Apple is said to have notified its suppliers of this plan; however, the transition to OLED still looks set to be a very gradual one.

There is evidence that some OLED suppliers have already started preparing to help with the high-volume production that would be necessary should Apple indeed make the switch. The new report claims that one such supplier, LG Display, is readying production capacity expansion to this end, while a slightly less recent story suggests that Samsung Display will follow a similar strategy.

However, Nikkei also reckons that, due to typically high iPhone volumes and technical difficulties of making OLED panels, LCD screen iPhones will likely continue to be offered alongside OLED display models. Intriguingly, this summer, a report from Korea had also pegged 2018 as the year that these advanced displays will start appearing in the iPhone line.
