Apple reportedly working on multiple new “Silicon-powered displays”

Apple is reportedly preparing to expand and upgrade its lineup of external displays, which are designed for use with Mac and iPad devices.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is working on several new external monitors that will be powered by Apple Silicon chips. This means that the screens will be able to rely less on resources from the attached computer.

The current lineup of Apple external monitors consists of the Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR. The Studio Display was released earlier this year and starts at $1,599, while the Pro Display XDR, which was released in 2019, starts at a hefty $4,999 (without a stand).

The Pro Display XDR features a 32-inch 6K (6016 x 3384) panel with 218 pixels per inch. Previous reports have suggested that Apple is developing a new external display with a 7K resolution, which could potentially have a higher pixel density of 245 PPI with a 32-inch screen, or maintain the same 218 PPI as the Pro Display XDR but on a larger 36-inch panel.

In addition to the Pro Display XDR, Gurman reports that Apple is working on “multiple new external monitors,” though it is unclear what these additional displays will be like or when they will be released.

It is also possible that the new Pro Display XDR may not be released until after the new Mac Pro, as the development of the computer is reportedly further along than the monitor.

Given the high price point of the current Pro Display XDR, it will be interesting to see how Apple positions its new external monitors in terms of pricing and features. It is possible that the company could introduce a range of monitors at different price points to appeal to a wider audience.
