Apple Reportedly Working on New MacBook Air with USB Type-C

A peculiar report from the not-always-reliable DigiTimes claims that Apple has decided to add USB Type-C connectivity to an in-the-works MacBook Air. However, the report could yet have some credibility…

Citing “sources from the upstream supply chain”, DigiTimes says that “Apple has decided to adopt the USB Type-C interface for its MacBook Air”, without providing any further details of Apple’s plans for future models in the Air line. But could this information really be referring to a future MacBook Pro?

AppleInsider points out that, as the MacBook Air has not seen a major update for years, USB Type-C ports are “more likely” heading to the MacBook Pro. Indeed, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a much better record of predicting future Apple releases than DigiTimes, has indicated that new MacBook Pro models due this year will deploy a number of form-slimming features.

These will reportedly include metal injection mold-made hinges and butterfly-mechanism keyboards. It’s possible, then, that the slimmed-down MacBook Pro has been mistaken by DigiTimes’ sources for an Air. According to Kuo, the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models will appear in 2016’s fourth quarter.
