Apple Reports 5 Million iPhone 5 Sold In First Week

Apple once again set a sales record with its newest iDevice, capping at around 5 million units sold in the first week of production. The company also admitted that it had amassed more pre-orders than initial stock, but said that most of the pre-orders for the handset had been shipped to consumers. Unfortunately though, the rest of the orders will not be filled until sometime in October. But this lack of stock hasn’t slowed down the frenzy, in fact, it seems to have made it worse.

The iPhone 5 is currently available in the; USA, France, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, U.K., Japan, Germany and Australia. But Apple said it will be available for 22 other countries by September 28th, and that number will grow to over 100 countries by the end of this year. Worldwide, Apple managed to secure a record breaking 2 million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 in just the first 24 hours that the device was available. And its obvious that Apple is growing, considering that this number is double what the iPhone 4S managed to create when it launched.

Apple CEO Tim Cook made the following statement about the epic release;

“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible. While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”

On a side note, the company also stated that over 100 million iDevices had already received and upgraded to the brand new iOS 6 operating system. However, they did not release numbers for specific devices.
