Apple have this week announced new Smart Battery Cases designed for its 2018 iPhone releases, including the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and XR. What’s more, the cases will also support Qi Wireless charging.

The Smart Battery Case will be available in both black and white and will be priced at $129. Similar in design to the past battery case option Apple offered for the iPhone 7, the cases are designed to add extra battery life to the iPhone.

Depending on the device, each case will provide a varying amount of battery life. The XS Battery Case is capable of offering up to 33 hours of talk time, 21 hours of internet use and a whole 25 hours of video playback. On the other hand, the XS Max Battery Case will offer up to 37 hours of talk time, 20 hours of internet use and some 25 hours of video playback. The XR Battery Case provides the most additional battery life with as much as 39 hours of talk time, 22 hours of internet use and 27 hours of video playback.

The iPhone 7 was the last device that came with a Smart Battery Case option, this is a decision thought to be down to the wireless charging feature attached to each iPhone since, the iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. This is also the first time we have witnessed a battery case for larger iPhones as previous plus devices were not compatible.

In addition to this, Apple’s product listings also confirm that the new Smart Battery Cases will also support Qi-certified wireless chargers. Other new options will also include an intelligent battery status on the device’s Lock Screen and in Notification Centre to inform you of the remaining charge of the device.

As well as being able to charge wirelessly, the Smart Battery Cases will also be able to charged via Lightning and speedier charging will available using USB-PD supported chargers.
