Apple is on the hunt for experts in generative AI to work on its most innovative technologies, including augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), according to recent job listings. One job posting, highlighted by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, is looking for a software engineer based in Cupertino to develop machine learning models for apps related to AR/VR.

Apple’s Learning Technology Group is particularly interested in engineers with experience or interest in “Conversational and Generative AI”. These engineers will work on creating innovative models to build applications on top of Apple’s cutting-edge technologies while developing their skills in AR/VR.

This move is seen as a potential step towards developing on-device app creation for Apple’s rumored mixed-reality headset, which is expected to be announced at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote.

Previously, The Information reported that Apple was creating software tools enabling developers and users to construct augmented reality apps for its forthcoming headset. This could potentially include app creation through Siri commands, allowing even users unfamiliar with programming to build AR apps available on Apple’s App Store.

This news follows recent rumors that Apple is ramping up its work on AI, with numerous job postings seeking machine learning specialists “passionate about building extraordinary autonomous systems.” Some roles, like the Visual Generative Modeling Research Engineer, involve work on “visual generative modeling to power applications across computation photography, image and video editing, 3D shape and motion reconstruction, avatar generation, and much more.”

These listings emerge amidst reports that Apple is reassessing its work on artificial intelligence. The tech giant is said to be testing generative AI concepts that might eventually be incorporated into Siri.
