Apple will release an iPad Pro featuring a 3-nanometer processor in 2022, according to reports.
Nikkei Asia has suggested that both Apple and Intel have been testing new chip designs featuring TSMC’s 3-nanometer production technology, and it’s likely that the chips will be ready for release in the second half of 2022. Apple is likely to use its iPad Pro as the next device to use the processors, though iPhones released in 2022, likely to be the iPhone 14, will continue to use 4-nanometer technology because of tight schedules.
TSMC says that 3nm technology could boost performance by up to 15%, whilst reducing power by 30%.
Should this rumor turn out to be true, it’d follow the company’s previous decision to debut new technology in the iPad Pro before bringing it to the iPhone. Apple launched a new iPad Air with a 5-nanometer chip in September and debuted the iPhone 12 months later with the same A14 Bionic chip. However, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down manufacturing and release schedules last year, and this year’s iPhone should debut on time.
