Apple set to release new AirPods later this year, says DigiTimes

Apple is working on next-generation AirPods set for release later this year, according to DigiTimes.

Their report suggests that “at least seven” suppliers have kicked off manufacturing circuit board-related products for upcoming AirPods, with Semco, LG Innotek, Kinsus, Unimicron, Nan Ya, Zhen Ding and AT&S all working on the new components and parts. The BT substrate shipments are also used for Apple Watch and iPhone, though by ramping up their manufacturing, it’s likely that they’re readying the release of a new set of AirPods products.

This news corresponds to previous suggestions from Mark Gurman, who reported that third-generation AirPods would come in late 2021 ahead of the holidays, featuring a new design that’s similar to the AirPods Pro. It would mark the first major update to the style of the AirPods since their inception, and perhaps even cut costs by using just one AirPods chassis rather than two.

Apple launched its second-gen AirPods for $159 in the United States, and added a $199 wireless charging case option. It’s likely that the new AirPods 3 will be cheaper than the AirPods Pro, currently at $249, but Apple may increase the cost of the standard model – or perhaps only offer a wireless charging option – to boost revenues.

We’re also expected to see a second-generation AirPods Pro product release in the coming months, with indications suggesting that they’ll feature fitness tracking technology, using your heartbeat to monitor activity.
