Apple shows off new iOS 11 features, including animated emoji

At its big keynote today, Apple has detailed various features that we can expect from iOS 11 when it gets its full public release later this month. A customizable Control Centre, more intelligent Siri, plentiful iPad multitasking features, and – for iPhone X users only – animated emoji are all on the way.

While the old Control Center’s layout was static, that of the new Control Center can be rearranged to bring, in easier reach, more of the functions that you most need. Meanwhile, Siri can learn your personal preferences and sync this data across various devices to better anticipate what you want.

iOS 11 also brings the iPad much closer to a true PC replacement than ever before. The interface now has a persistent Dock in which you can place essential apps. This Dock can be brought up at any time. It is also now possible to Drag and Drop content like images and links between iPad apps.

Owners of iPhones and iPads running on an A9 chip or above can also download augmented reality apps that use Apple’s new framework ARKit, while iPhone X owners can use 3D animated emoji. These “animoji”, as they are called, are produced on the basis of facial expressions that the iPhone X’s 3D-sensing camera can detect.

iOS 11, other exciting features of which include a redesigned App Store and person-to-person payments via Apple Pay, will be freely available to download from September 19. It will be compatible with all iOS devices released in 2013 or later.
