Apple supplier begins manufacturing A15 chip

Apple iPhone

Apple’s processor supplier TSMC has begun production on the A15 chip for the iPhone 13.

According to supply chain insiders, the company has begun working on production for the new iPhone 12 ahead of a September 2021 launch. Digitimes suggests that initial production has begun, and added that the company was planning to create more A15 chips than the A14 Bionic which was used in the iPhone 12.

Whether that means Apple is planning to sell more iPhone 13 models, or it’s just hedging its bets and getting ahead, remains to be seen. Speaking of the news, Digitimes said: “TSMC has kicked off production for Apple’s next-generation iPhone processor dubbed A15 and will see demand for the chip surpass that for its predecessor last year in scale, according to industry sources.”

It’s important to note that Digitimes has a mixed track record when it comes to Apple information, but it does have reliable sources. We know for certain that the company is working on the iPhone 13, but the report from Digitimes as to whether the new A15 chip has entered manufacturing should be taken with a pinch of salt.

However, their reports do correspond to previous suggestions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple planned to lower its iPhone 12 processor production to make way for the iPhone 13. Remember that the iPhone 12 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; it’s likely that the iPhone 13, however, will be released on time.
