Apple Testing Apple Pencil Support for 9.7-Inch iPad Line?

Apple has been seriously investigating the possibility of releasing a 9.7-inch iPad – possibly the upcoming iPad Air 3 – that includes compatibility with the Apple Pencil, judging from a new report.

The report comes from 9to5Mac, which has cited unnamed sources claiming that Apple has “been testing versions of the 9.7-inch iPad panel that are compatible with the Apple Pencil”. The same report suggests that the iPad Air 3 will “likely” debut at an event in mid-March.

The story’s wording does not make clear whether Apple Pencil support should be included in this particular upcoming mid-sized slate. However, if it is included, and the rumored four-speaker system comes to fruition, the iPad Air 3 would undoubtedly prove more than an incremental follow-up to the still well-regarded iPad Air 2.
