Apple is reportedly planning to announce its AR headset in 2022.
According to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, the Cupertino company will announce the new headset in 2022, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be available for sale in the same year. Similar to the announcement and rollout of the Apple Watch, we’re likely to see Apple unveil the new headset at a press event but not actually release the device until the following year.
“I expect the gap between the introduction of Apple’s first headset—scheduled for as early as next year—to be sizable and perhaps rival that of the original Apple Watch,” Guman said in his speech.
He added that the company’s first headset will feature an expensive-to-build design and offer interchangeable lenses, with plans to offer prescription lenses in some locations.
Bloomberg added that Apple will need to work with governments and partner with a number of manufacturers on complicated technologies that have yet to be used, which is why the company wants to announce the product before it goes on sale. By premiering the device, it will be less likely to suffer leaks which could damage the product before it’s ready.
Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also shared thoughts on the new headset, suggesting that a Q4 2022 date has already been pencilled in. Kuo says that the new headset will feature a processor that features the same computing power level as the Mac, with an advanced chip.
