Apple is reportedly planning to drop support for the original iPhone SE, as well as the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus from 2021 with the release of iOS 15, according to The Verifier.
The news falls in line with previous release cycles, with Apple removing support for devices more than five years old, in order to optimize for the latest devices and their capabilities.
If the news is accurate, it would mean that iOS 15 would support the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.
The new version of the operating system would also be compatible with the 2020 second-generation iPhone SE, the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and smartphones in the 2021 iPhone series, making it the biggest release in history.
Last year, The Verifier suggested that iOS 14 would be the last version of the operating system that would support the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE. The news would not come as a surprise; Apple typically supports devices for four to five years post-release.
We don’t know yet which iPad devices will be compatible with the corresponding iPadOS 15, but it’s likely that all devices released in the last three to four years will receive the update.
