Apple to launch new fitness app on iOS 14

Apple will reportedly launch a new fitness app in iOS 14, designed to unify the Apple Watch and iOS experience and allow users to conduct workouts from the comfort of their home.

Currently codenamed Seymour, the app will reportedly be named Fit or Fitness when it launcheds in iOS 14, alongside a release on watchOS, tvOS, and iPadOS simultaneously.

Rather than joining the current Activity app, the new Fitness app will be a standalone product, allowing users to download fitness videos covering a wide range of workouts and activities, designed to get users to spend more time on their feet exercising and having fun.

The videos and complementary software will offer users guidance on their fitness regimes, such as how to complete an activity on an Apple Watch or how to properly use an exercise bike at home, with personalized challenges and courses that can be synced across devices.

The videos, which will work alongside the software, will be available to watch on iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs, with the Apple Watch working alongside it to track progress through a workout routine, similar to how the Watch currently tracks pre-programmed Workout options.

The new service will reportedly be free at launch, and there is no reference to in-app purchases, but it could be that Apple wants to build a new fitness hub and add an additional revenue stream to its bow, similar to what itā€™s doing with Apple News+ and Apple Arcade.

At present, Apple is working on a number of activities for launch, such as indoor running, stretching, strength training, outdoor walking, dance, yoga, and core training.

Though there is no guarantee that this will be ready for a WWDC unveiling, insiders say that the idea is for the software to be ready for the public launch of the operating systems this fall.
