Apple is working on the third generation of its popular iPhone SE smartphone.
According to DigiTimes, the Cupertino company has been working on refreshing its entry-level iPhone, which proved incredibly popular when the second-generation model was launched last year.
Apple timed the release of the iPhone SE 2 just right – the world went into a global lockdown, and consumers’ purse strings tightened.
Previously, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple would bring a new processor as well as 5G capabilities to its basic iPhone SE model next year, confirming the company’s plans to release the ‘cheapest 5G iPhone ever’, designed to help Apple compete in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
Apple first introduced the iPhone SE in 2016, offering an affordable iPhone that could replace the popular iPhone 5S. Last April, the model was updated based on the iPhone 8 chassis and included an A13 Bionic processor, a larger screen, and improved cameras compared to its predecessor. It’s likely that the third generation won’t sport quite as many changes as the jump from the first to second generation.
A separate report suggests that Apple will overhaul the iPhone SE design in 2023 by introducing an under-display fingerprint sensor, after introducing it to the iPhone 14 range in 2022.
