Apple will offer faster data transfer speeds via USB-C on upcoming iPhones.
Next year’s iPhone 15 range, expected to be made up of the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 Max, and the iPhone 15 Plus, will reportedly transition to USB-C charging.
Now, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it’s being reported that the change could result in a “significant boost” in wired transfer speeds. Kuo has reported that the switch to USB-C is all-but-confirmed, but that only the Pro and Max models will support high-end data transfer speeds to offer another differentiation between the budget and Pro models.
It’s believed that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will adopt the same data transfer speeds as the Lightning port, capped at 480 Mbps. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Max will reportedly feature USB-C 3.2 speeds, offering up to 20 Gbps through wired data transfer.
“My latest survey indicates all 2H23 new iPhones will abandon Lightning and change to USB-C, but only two high-end models (15 Pro & 15 Pro Max) will support the wired high-speed transfer, and the two standard ones (15 & 15 15 Plus) still support USB 2.0 same as Lightning,” Kuo said in a report. “I predict that 15 Pro & 15 Pro Max will support at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. This spec upgrade means the wired transfer and video output user experience will significantly improve.”
