Apple to sell 35 million AirTags in 2022, second-gen expected

Apple sold 20 million AirTags in 2021 and is expected to top 35 million in 2022, according to Ming-Chi Kuo.

The reliable analyst suggests that Apple has been enjoying success with the AirTags range, and although the company hasn’t made much of a fuss about the product since it launched more than a year ago, it’s enjoying stellar sales – so much so that a second-generation model could already be in development.

“AirTag, which has not received much attention, has gradually grown in shipments since its release. Shipment estimations of AirTag reach about 20 mn & 35 mn units in 2021 & 2022, respectively. if AirTag shipments continue to grow, I believe Apple will develop the 2nd generation,” Kuo said in a tweet.

Apple released the AirTag – its version of the popular Tile tracker – to help consumers track their keys, headphones, backpacks, luggage and more. The device garnered some controversy at launch as some were concerned it could be used to stalk people. As a result, Apple made several changes to the firmware to address issues such as stalking, and it now makes a sound if it’s far away from the original owner for an extended period.

The company even made the unusual move of launching a dedicated Android app.

There’s no news on what could be added to a second-generation AirTag, or if Apple is indeed even working on them right now. The device features a replaceable battery so, in theory, it should be able to be reused for years and years and should offer the same level of functionality.
