Apple will transition its AirPods and Mac accessories to USB-C in 2024.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will begin switching across its Mac accessories such as Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, as well as the AirPods Pro, AirPods, and AirPods Max, to the USB-C port charging standard in two years.
It was confirmed last week that the European Parliament would force technology giants to transition to USB-C charging as a common charging port around the world by the end of 2024, prompting a number of rumors to suggest the next iPhone would be USB-C. The iPhone 15 range will be Apple’s first to offer USB-C charging, replacing the Lightning connector, and a new iPhone SE will follow in 2024.
According to Gurman, consumers can expect major Mac updates next year, including the long-awaited return of a 27-inch iMac and the Mac Pro.
Gurman added that he believes the USB-C era will be “shorter” than Lightning, suggesting that Apple is planning to move onto wireless charging only in the coming years. In doing so, Apple could create a truly wireless iPhone without ports.
