Apple has made the decision to switch from its Lightning adaptor to USB-C from 2023, it has been reported. Reliable insider Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple will begin moving over its products from its Lighting cable to USB-C across its iPhones, AirPods, and iPads as soon as next year.
It has also been reported that Apple will release AirPods Pro 2 later this year with a Lightning port, before re-releasing the device in 2023 with USB-C charging, similar to how it re-released the AirPods Pro to accommodate MagSafe when Apple introduced the new charging method for the iPhone 12.
“I predict Apple will launch USB-C-capable charging cases for all AirPods models in 2023. However, the charging case of the new AirPods Pro 2 launched in 2H22 may still support Lightning,” Kuo said.
Earlier in the year, Kuo reported Apple’s plans to switch to USB-C in the coming years. As well as the iPhone, it’s likely that USB-C charging will come to accessories like the MagSafe Battery Pack, Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad to streamline and unify the product line-up.
This should mean Apple will launch the first USB-C iPhone next year, the iPhone 15.
One of the main reasons for switching to USB-C is changing legislation in the European Union. The EU will force technology companies to ship products with USB-C charging in the coming years, and rather than selling different products in different markets, Apple will switch around the world.
