Various East Asian camera lens makers have sent Apple dual-lens camera samples to test for potential inclusion in the upcoming iPhone 7 Plus, a new report claims.
This report is from DigiTimes, which names the Taiwan-based Largan Technology among these companies and cites sources from the upstream supply chain. It adds that Apple is said to be intending to place a dual-lens camera in its next phablet.
Largan already supplies over 60% of the cameras in iPhone models, the news outlet further observes – but, apparently, some market watchers consider Apple likely to turn to other companies for dual-lens camera components in order to reduce risks.
There’s good reason to believe the authenticity of the report – as, despite the patchy record of DigiTimes with its predictions about in-the-works Apple products, its upstream supply chain sources, as MacRumors points out, have been reliable in the past.
Little can be said with confidence about what differences Apple should bring to iPhone cameras with the iPhone 7 series. However, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted that a dual-lens camera would indeed feature in certain models of the iPhone 7 Plus, with other models instead featuring a single-lens iSight camera in its place.
