Apple TV+’s foray into cinema has culminated in a remarkable 13 Oscar nominations for its productions Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon. This achievement comes as a pinnacle moment for the streaming service, especially following its historic Best Picture win for CODA in 2022.
Despite a quieter year in 2023, Apple has bounced back with these two high-profile films.
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon leads the charge with multiple nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for Lily Gladstone. Her nomination is particularly noteworthy as she is the first native actress of American descent to be recognized by the Academy in this category.
The film also earned nominations in several other categories, such as Directing, Film Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Music.
On the other hand, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon has been acknowledged for its impressive costume design, production design, and visual effects. Both films initially premiered in cinemas, reflecting Apple’s strategic shift to a theatrical-first distribution approach, and are now available on Apple TV+, with Napoleon also accessible via video-on-demand.
