Apple TV+ has announced the title and shared first-look photos of its forthcoming Godzilla universe TV series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Starring Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, the series is set in the aftermath of the 2014 Godzilla film and explores the protagonists’ connection to the Monarch organization.
The press photos reveal that Godzilla, along with other monsters, will feature throughout the 10-episode series. What sets this show apart is the reported use of Apple’s Immersive Video format, which has been employed to film parts of the series for a spatial 3D playback experience on the soon-to-be-released Apple Vision Pro headset.
Although Apple has not officially verified the use of 3D cameras in production, they are said to be developing an assortment of content for the Vision Pro headset, set to launch next year. Apple Immersive Video, a new proprietary video format, is known to capture 180-degree high-resolution imagery and include a spatial audio track.
During the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), press members were shown demo reel footage of the technology running on the Vision Pro headset, but no specific content announcements were made. Apple did, however, demonstrate the 3D Dolby Vision cut of Avatar being played on Vision Pro, showing a snippet of its “Immersive Video” capabilities.
In related news, the team behind Prehistoric Planet, another Apple TV+ show, is rumored to be working on a dinosaur AR experience. The new MonsterVerse TV series may very well be a strong candidate for a similar visually immersive spectacle.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters includes father and son actors Kurt and Wyatt Russell, playing the same character at different points in time. The creative team consists of Matt Fraction and Chris Black, who also produced the hit Apple TV+ sci-fi series Severance. The release date for the Godzilla universe series has not yet been disclosed, leaving fans eagerly awaiting more details.
