Can you imagine a world in which you found yourself eating photographs, dating ducks, or living on a shelf like a trophy? It seems that Apple TV+ can – or more specifically, GLOW creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensh, who are also behind the highly anticipated female-driven anthology series, Roar, for which a trailer has now been released.
The two-minute trailer gives us a glimpse of what we can expect from this darkly comedic series, which is set to debut globally and exclusively on Apple TV+ on Friday, April 16. Interestingly, we are set to receive all eight episodes on that day, instead of a new instalment being released weekly in the manner of a traditional TV series.
Roar is based on Cecelia Ahern’s 2018 short story collection of the same name, and consists of feminist fables encompassing such genres as magical realism and psychological horror, featuring ordinary women in highly extraordinary circumstances. Yet, the women’s struggles across the eight episodes are also universal.
Roar will be the first series released under co-showrunners Mensch and Flahive’s overall deal with Apple. It was reported a year ago by Variety that Apple TV+ had ordered the series, and that Nicole Kidman would be an executive producer on the show, in addition to starring in it. Sure enough, that is exactly what has happened.
Kidman is joined on the executive production team by Flahive, Mensh, Ahern, Per Saari, Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky, Allie Goss, and Theresa Park. The show is produced for Apple by Endeavour Content.
We’ll try not to spoil things too much if you haven’t yet watched the trailer, except to say that the Apple press release has also confirmed various other acclaimed actors will star across the eight distinct stories, including Cynthia Erivo, Issa Rae, Merritt Wever, Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Meera Syal, Fivel Stewart, and Kara Hayward.
Could Roar mark the start of an increasing tendency for Apple TV+ to debut all the episodes of a show at the same time? We certainly hope so!
