Apple has unveiled its much-anticipated headphones under the Apple brand, called AirPods Max.
The $549 headphones are designed to compete against the likes of Sony and Bose.
The Cupertino-based company announced the release of the new AirPods Max online via a press release, following the previous news that a product drop was imminent.
The company’s new wireless headphones “bring the magic of AirPods” to an over-ear design for the first time, with some suggesting Apple plans to slowly deviate from its Beats sub-brand.
AirPods Max features a custom acoustic design and an H1 chip for speed and performance. They also include advanced software to power computational audio, offering what Apple calls a “breakthrough” listening experience with Adaptive EQ, as well as Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode, and spatial audio.
Apple will release AirPods Max in five color options: gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink.
Users can order the new headphones from today, with orders shipping from December 15.
The new headphones feature an H1 chip in each ear, which allows for a breathtaking nine billion operations per second. Adaptive EQ measures the sound signal and adapts, Active Noise Cancellation offers a more immersive sound experience, and Transparent Mode means users can listen to the outside world whilst they’re wearing their headphones. Spatial Audio is also possible with dynamic head tracking, ideal for music, gaming, and movies.
Apple says that AirPods Max feature a 20-hour battery life, and they can be stored in the included Smart Case, which puts the AirPods into an ultralow-power state to preserve battery life.
