Apple unveils new Apple TV with HDR and 4K support

Apple has given its set-top box a major revamp, having announced the Apple TV 4K. The introduction of support for 4K-resolution content is the main selling point, to go with a much beefier processor.

While the availability of 4K content is very much in its infancy on the iTunes Store, Apple has better future-proofed the Apple TV by adding 4K support. This had been an obvious omission from the feature list of the previous model, which was released in October 2015. And, this year, Apple will upgrade all HD content to 4K HDR.

The Apple TV 4K also has, compared to its predecessor, much more power under the hood. While the 2015 model used an A8 chip that has long been dropped from Apple’s iPhone lineup, the Apple TV 4K runs on an A10X Fusion chip – the same processor that is inside the latest iPad Pro devices.

That’s an amazing amount of power for a set-top box, and it will ease 4K streaming on the device. The new Apple TV also supports HDR and is capable of playing 4K content at 60 frames per second, including games.
