Apple has updated its smart assistant Siri in iOS 14.5, set for release in the coming weeks, and has confirmed that Siri will no longer default to a female voice.
The company is adding two new choices to choose from, giving consumers more options when using the assistant.
The new changes also apply to HomePod and are part of Apple’s commitment to diversity.
Speaking to TechCrunch, a spokesperson for Apple said: “We’re excited to introduce two new Siri voices for English speakers and the option for Siri users to select the voice they want when they set up their device. This is a continuation of Apple’s long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion and products and services that are designed to better reflect the diversity of the world we live in.”
As well as introducing new voices, Apple has confirmed that they run through Apple’s Apple’s Neural text to speech engine, which improves the flow of the smart assistant and creates more organic, natural-sounding voices.
As of iOS 14.5, users will be asked to choose a Siri voice for the first time.
