Apple Watch Led US Smartwatch Market in Second Quarter

Apple shows no sign of relinquishing its lead in the US smartwatch market – as, according to new data from Kantar, the Apple Watch took a share of 33.5% during the year’s second quarter.

Wearable device data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has revealed that, while Apple led the sector, its lead did slightly shrink over the period, perhaps because some consumers decided to hold off for the expected announcement of the second generation Apple Watch.

That model, the Apple Watch Series 2, has boosted the functionality of the Apple Watch for fitness buffs, not least due to the additions of GPS, greater water resistance and a number of swim tracking features. These improvements could help Apple to further grow its market share, especially as Kantar has revealed that fitness bands remain popular with the US public.
