Apple Watch Series 3 can now track your skiing and snowboarding activities

Three Apple Watch Series 3 smartwatches are displayed in a row, showing the same time (10:09) and date (Friday, Sep 23). From left to right, they feature black, pink, and white wristbands. Each watch screen shows icons for messages, weather, and fitness apps to track skiing or snowboarding activities.

Apple has announced that skiers and snowboarders can now use their Apple Watch Series 3 to track their activities.

This is possible thanks to apps such as snoww, Slopes, Squaw Alpine, Snocru, and Ski Tracks which have all been updated to take advantage of the custom workout APIs that were released in watchOS 4.2, enabling the tracking of specialized metrics:

  • Total vertical descent and horizontal distance
  • Number of runs
  • Average and maximum speeds
  • Total time spent
  • Calories burned

Tracking for ski and snowboarding is limited to Series 3 models as these are the only watches with built-in altimeter which is used to track elevation.

However, not all of this information is available in the Activity or Workout apps quite just yet, but some apps do have integrations. Ski Tracks, for example, features 17 different snow workouts that allow you to earn credit toward Activity rings and Snocru can count toward your active calorie measurements in the Activity app.

Take a look at some of the updated appsĀ that are now available to download in the App Store as long as you have a Series 3 device with watchOS 4.2 or later.
