The Apple Watch Series 7 will be in short supply upon launch.
For months now, we’ve been reporting on production and supply chain issues for this year’s new Apple Watch, and despite these challenges, Apple still plans to announce the new wearable at its upcoming event – likely to be held on September 14.
However, a new report has confirmed that the new Apple Watch will be in short supply when it launches, with the company struggling to keep up with demand and ongoing supply chain issues. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman says that Apple will announce the Apple Watch next week, but that it will be sold in “limited quantities” until supply chain issues are resolved.
In his newsletter, Gurman said Apple could delay the Apple Watch announcement, go ahead and make the watch available in limited quantities, or announce the watch and delay the release. It’s likely that the second open will come true, meaning fans could wait a long time to get their hands on the upcoming model, perhaps even waiting until a 2022 release.
“But if you can’t wait to get the new watch, you may have to,” Gurman said in his report. “My colleague Debby Wu and I reported that the new display is causing production headaches. When that happens with a new product, there are typically three outcomes: The announcement is delayed until the issues are fixed, the product launches on time in small quantities, or the device is announced on time but goes on sale later. I’m led to believe that we’ll see an announcement during the usual September event alongside the iPhone, but there will be a mix of the models shipping late or in small quantities.”
This year’s Apple Watch is likely to feature a new design that will encourage people to make the upgrade. It’ll be sold in larger 41mm and 45mm size options, and feature an improved battery life and a faster processor, with some previously-rumored features like blood glucose monitoring reportedly delayed until 2022 or beyond due to technical issues.
