Apple Watches to feature solid state buttons

It seems the Apple Watch has been the centre of discussion recently as just this week we have reported on the new Pride Band, and the Cellular Apple Watch Series 3 coming to more countries soon. Now, according to Fast Company, future versions of Apple Watch will be updated with solid state buttons.

The watch will feature a Digital Crown and a Side button. Apple is doing away with movable switch controls and the new solid state buttons won’t physically click, but willuse a Taptic Engine technology to simulate clicks and will vibrate slightly.

“Apple will stick with the Watch’s current button configuration, with a button and a digital crown situated on one side of the device, but neither will physically click as before. Rather than reacting to the user’s touch by physically moving back and forth, the new buttons will vibrate slightly under the fingertip, using the haptic effect Apple calls the Taptic Engine.”

The new buttons will be similar to the new solid-state buttons introduced to the iPhone 7 in 2016. The MacBook and MacBook Pro also feature similar technology in their trackpads, which also lack physical buttons.

The solid state buttons will improve water resistance and take up less space, allowing for a bigger battery to be implemented. Fast Company predict the new buttons could be introduced before the end of 2018 and in the future, Apple could even introduce a watch with no buttons at all.
