Apple will launch a new iPhone SE-style smartphone in 2020, according to Nikkei.
The Asian news outlet has suggested that Apple will launch a next-generation iPhone SE.
“The size of the new model will be similar to the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 that was introduced in 2017,” the report suggests.
“The model will share most of the same components with the flagship iPhones this year, and it will feature the lower-cost liquid crystal display that will help Apple achieve the lower starting price-tag, although the final pricing for the model is not yet settled,” they added.
Rumors of an affordable iPhone have been circulating ever since the launch of the original iPhone SE back in 2016, with Apple more recently reportedly considering modeling the new device off of the iPhone 8, which the Economic Daily News suggested back in April 2019.
According to Economic Daily News, Apple will release the device in early 2020 and it will feature an LCD display to cut costs, as well as an A13 processor, a single-lens rear camera, and 128GB of base storage.
It’s unknown whether the new iPhone will feature a notched design and Face ID or a Touch ID home button to reduce costs, although the latter seems more plausible.
Apple’s cheapest iPhone right now is the iPhone 7, starting from just $449 in the United States, but a more advanced affordable model to compete with the likes of the Google Pixel 3a makes sense, especially as Samsung and others are cannibalizing Apple’s sales.
Apple is expected to end sales of the iPhone 7 when its new flagship smartphone range launches next week, which would leave room in the line-up for an affordable smartphone.
