Apple will link AirPods to Apple ID to offer Find My support in iOS 15

Apple will finally link users’ AirPods to their Apple IDs as part of iOS 15.

The change will mean that users can locate their lost AirPods for the first time using the Find My app, even if they’re disconnected and away from BlueTooth. Right now, it can be hard to find your lost AirPods as they’ll only play a sound when they are connected to your iPhone, meaning it’s easy to lose them even in your home.

However, Apple will adopt similar technology to AirTags in iOS 15 and allow users to precisely locate their AirPods. The feature will be offered to those with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, though they won’t be available for those with standard AirPods.

Apple will, for the first time, link your AirPods to your Apple ID, sending the location of your device back to the Find My network, even if they’re connected to another device. AirPods won’t be activation locked, and they can be removed from your Apple ID and Find My network.

It’s important to note that these features have been revealed through an iOS 15 beta code check, and they’re still in development. Apple will likely release it as part of the iOS 15 update in September, but you’ll also need to give your AirPods Pro and AirPods Max a firmware update to properly benefit from the changes.

Apple is also widely expected to announce AirPods 3 in September, and the model could be amongst the first to support the new Find My features.
