Apple is expected to release four new iPhones in 2020, according to JP Morgan.
Speaking to CNBC, JP Morgan analysts said that they expect Apple to unveil four new smartphone models next year, including three OLED iPhones at 5.4-inches, 6.1-inches, and 6.7-inches, all of which featuring 5G and 3D sensing technology.
“Our expectations include all three Sep-2020 iPhones (5.4″/6.1″/6.7″ screen sizes) will adopt OLED displays and 5G baseband modems (with support for mmWave frequencies), and at least two of the three models adopting world facing 3D Sensing (Time of Flight) driving industry-leading AR/VR capabilities which can be leveraged by custom built applications (including games),” said the source in a press release.
JP Morgan was cool on the potential selling effects of 5G, suggesting that Apple will sell around 195 million iPhones in 2020. However, this figure is up from the 180 million units the company is expected to see this year.
The company said “more significant spec upgrades” will drive bigger sales.
As well as three new high-end phones, the successors to the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, Apple is expected to launch a low-cost smartphone to appease price-conscious consumers – something the company has been rumored to do for a number of years.
Apple will target “a much more value category” than its previous iPhone. It’s expected that this device will be the same size as the iPhone 8, but come without features such as 5G and an OLED display, using LCD instead.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously suggested that Apple would lift the lid on three new OLED iPhone sizes in 2020, and introduce 5G connectivity for the first time.
This is the first report we’ve heard that explicitly mentions a low-cost smartphone, though, which is an exciting development and one to watch.
