Apple will release HomePod Mini next week, no HomePod 2 until 2021

Apple will release a new low-cost HomePod Mini at its digital-only event next week, but not a second-generation HomePod, according to a leaker on Twitter, known as l0vetodream.

It has been widely reported that Apple would announce a second-generation HomePod to bolster its smart speaker market share, having failed to connect with consumers in the same way as Google and Amazon.

But now it seems as though Apple is keen to target the more price-conscious consumer, releasing a sub-$100 smart speaker called the HomePod Mini.

Rumors first went into overdrive earlier in the year, when Apple allowed its employees to buy up to ten HomePod devices at up to 50% off their retail price.

Traditionally, Apple does this when it wants to clear its inventory and prepare for a new product model. However, it’s now believed that Apple will make the HomePod mini its more affordable and accessible device and push it alongside iPhone and Mac sales, to better compete in the smart home market.

We already know that the original HomePod – which has been discounted several times – has struggled to garner much interest. Apple doesn’t officially offer sales data for HomePod, but it forms part of the successful Wearables, Home, and Accessories division, and has failed to make much of an impact.

The fact the device is now more than two and a half years old and has yet to be updated also suggests that Apple wants to go in a different direction.

In recent years, Apple has added new functionality to the HomePod such as multi-room audio, Handoff support, and third-party music support is expected in a future software update, so users can finally listen to their favorite songs via Spotify rather than Apple Music.
