Apple is working on a new Internet Recovery option on iOS, according to reports.
Filipe Espósito from 9to5Mac has discovered new code in the iOS 13.4 beta, suggesting that the firm was working on an Internet Recovery option that would allow users to restore their device’s firmware without having to rely on a Mac or PC, or perhaps even a USB cable.
Now, the third beta of the new operating system update has revealed a new feature which Apple calls “OS Recovery,” and it appears that it’s a new way to restore an iPhone, iPad, or another Apple device without having to first connect them to a Windows or macOS device.
The code suggests that it would be possible for users to restore their devices over the year, as well as by connecting their devices to another iPhone or iPad using a USB connector.
Insiders believe that the new feature will work in a similar manner to macOS Internet Recovery, an app that allows users to reinstall the operating system over the internet, without needing another computer nearby or a CD drive, which most Macs don’t have.
It’s likely that Apple is testing this new feature for its upcoming iOS 14 operating system, which is set to be unveiled this June at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
If the new feature does come to fruition, it could perhaps signal that Apple is working on a new iPhone without a Lightning or USB-C connector, and that everything will be in the cloud.
