Apple working on official MagSafe battery pack for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13

Apple is reportedly planning to release an official MagSafe battery pack for the iPhone 12.

The company released a range of accessories as part of the iPhone 12 announcement, including a wallet and MagSafe wireless chargers that facilitate the charger “puck”.

However, according to a Bloomberg report, an official battery pack is now in the works at Cupertino.

Several companies have already released their own external battery packs, as MagSafe is open-source and can be used by third parties. However, an official battery pack would offer users a safe way to extend the life of their phone with an official, Apple-approved product.

The Bloomberg report suggests that Apple has been working on the technology for more than a year and that it would have been released as part of the MagSafe launch if it did not have “issues with software”. According to insiders, the pack is reporting that it’s overheating when it’s not, and Apple did not want to announce the product only to have to pull it later on.

According to one source, the software issues with the battery pack are so bad that the company could even scrap the product, similar to the ill-fated AirPower charging pad, which was announced three years before it was finally scrapped by the company due to production issues.

The idea behind the external power pack would be that it could “clip” on the back of the iPhone 12 with magnets and start charging your device. In iOS 14.5 code, developers found their first tease of the official product, and patent publications also suggest that new MagSafe products are in the works.
