Apple’s Artificial Intelligence: Probable Integration in 2024

As per recent insights from Jeff Pu, an analyst with Haitong International Securities focusing on Apple’s supply chain, Apple may be eyeing 2024 to usher in generative AI technology for its iPhone and iPad devices.

Pu’s supply chain investigations indicate Apple’s intent to set up several AI servers in 2023, with a significant expansion the following year. The strategy seems to be a blend of cloud-based AI complemented by “edge AI”, emphasizing data processing directly on the devices.

Apple’s foray into generative AI will require patience. The tech giant remains cautious about navigating personal data use, ensuring its practices fall in line with its staunch stance on user privacy.

The speculated 2024 rollout aligns with potential introductions in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Notably, reports from The Information have previously hinted at Apple’s plans to infuse large language models into Siri, propelling advanced task automation. Such advancements could very well see integration with the Shortcuts app, possibly making its debut in the iOS 18 update.

Yet, contrasting views emerge from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who perceives Apple’s pace in generative AI as lagging compared to competitors. This could imply a more conservative estimate, stretching the technology’s unveiling to 2025 or even later.

The generative AI realm witnessed a spotlight shift when OpenAI launched ChatGPT, a revolutionary chatbot with human-like response capabilities. With giants like Google and Microsoft diving into the arena, the focus on large language model-trained chatbots is undeniable. Adding to the buzz, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman disclosed Apple’s internal workings on a ChatGPT analog, internally christened “Apple GPT”. However, the blueprint for its public introduction remains ambiguous.

Apple’s keen interest in generative AI isn’t covert. Job listings on the Cupertino firm’s website in the recent past have shed light on its pursuits in this domain.

Reflecting on Apple’s journey in generative AI, CEO Tim Cook, in a recent conversation with Forbes, said: “We’ve been working on generative AI for years”. He added that Apple was “going to approach [generative AI] really thoughtfully… because we’re fully aware of the not-good uses that it can have”.
