Apple’s first AR/VR headset could be in production as early as August

The hype for Apple’s supposedly upcoming virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headset has just turned up a notch, as a report from DigiTimes has suggested that Apple has conducted its second-phase engineering validation and testing (EVT 2) for the device. “Sources at component suppliers” cited in the report suggested that users can expect to see its debut before 2022 is out.

If reports are to be believed, the headset is set to go into mass production in August or September this year, in readiness for a release to the public in the final quarter of 2022.

DigiTimes has also suggested that Apple is planning to launch a second version of its AR/VR headset in 2023 that is lighter and features an improved battery, with more affordable pricing. This would seem to conflict with the recent indication by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that the first version of the headset may not turn up until that year.

Still, the headset we are expecting to enter production in the fall – if we are to believe the DigiTimes report – will be worn over the eyes and is said to be aimed towards developers and high-end professionals.

However, Apple is also reported to be working on a project known as “Apple Glasses”, which will come in the form of traditional eyeglasses. These will apparently represent the Cupertino firm’s ultimate near-term goal as far as augmented reality is concerned.
