Apple’s new virtual and augmented reality headset will run on an operating system called xrOS.

Previous reports suggested that Apple was working on a “realityOS” or “rOS” name for the software to accompany its new headset, following the same naming convention as iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. According to Bloomberg, the company has changed its mind about the rOS name and will instead call the product xrOS.

The Cupertino company is widely expected to announce the new headset in the coming months, and it will run on its own operating systems like the Apple TV and Apple Watch. The service will also have its own App Store.

The new name reportedly stands for extended reality operating system, as it covers both augmented and virtual reality technologies in one. Apple is reportedly working on a headset similar to the Microsoft HoloLens and incorporates popular Apple apps such as Maps, Messages, and FaceTime, offering an all-new AR/VR experience.

A new software kit is also in the works so third-party developers can create their own software for the headset.

Bloomberg’s report adds that Apple has incorporated a shell company named Deep Dive LLC, and that this company has registered the xrOS trademark in several countries in recent months. It’s common for Apple to use shell companies to register trademarks for new products, without directly linking them to Apple.
