A British man has been arrested as part of an investigation into hacks of Sony PlayStation and Xbox systems that led to users being unable to access the service. Police say that they have arrested an 18-year-old man in Southport, near Liverpool.
The man has been accused gaining unauthorized access to computer material as well as knowingly providing false information to law enforcement agencies. UK cybercrime teams have worked with the FBI in order to investigate the hacks. Users found that they could not access the services on Christmas Day after a distributed-denial-of-service attack caused servers to stop working.
Craig Jones of Serocu (South East Regional Organized Crime Unit) said: “This investigation is a good example of joint law enforcement co-operation in relation to a type of criminality that is not restricted by any geographical boundaries.”
The hacks were attributed to a group called Lizard Squad after they claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Association of Police Officer’s Peter Goodman said “This is a significant arrest… of a UK citizen suspected of engaging in serious and organized cybercrime on the national and international stage.”
