To mark World Emoji Day, Apple has revealed upcoming emoji coming to iPhones, iPads, and Macs later in the year – expected to be released in the iOS 14.2 update in October.
The new emoji form part of the industry-wide Emoji 13 update. Remember that Apple, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and others create their own designs for each of the emoji.
Some of the most notable new emoji include a smiling face with a tear, and a disguised face, as well as a ninja, a person in a tuxedo, a man with a veil, and people hugging.
New body parts coming to Emoji 13 include pinched fingers, an anatomical heart, and lungs, whilst new animals include a dodo, fly, beetle, worm, black cat, beaver, polar bear, mammoth, and seal.
New food items coming with iOS 14.2 include blueberries, an olive, bell peppers, flatbreads, fondue, and bubble tea, whilst new household items include a potted plant, a teapot, a pinata, a magic wand, mirror, window, plunger, mousetrap, toothbrush, bucket, and more.
Apple is also introducing an accordion and a long drum, whilst thong sandals and military helmets will also be added. Thatās on top of miscellaneous items such as a transgender symbol, a transgender flag, an elevator,Ā a coin, a rock, wood, a hut, a pickup truck, a roller skate, and more, making it one of the biggest emoji releases in the history of the language.
On top of the new characters and items, the update features 55 new gender and skin tone variants, as well as gender-inclusive emojis that can be used instead of gendered variants.
Earlier in the year, it was revealed that Emoji 14 will be delayed by the Unicode Consortium. Speaking of the delay, a spokesperson said: āUnder the current circumstances we’ve heard that our contributors have a lot on their plates at the moment and decided it was in the best interests of our volunteers and the organizations that depend on the standard to push out our release date,”
āThis year we simply can’t commit to the same schedule we’ve adhered to in the past.ā
