Matt Reeves is working on expanding his Batman mythos far beyond the cinematic trilogy he has in store for us even before the movie actually hit theaters. In cooperation with HBO Max, which is likewise working on expanding the DCEU and the complete slate of DC’s adaptations, it has been reported that Reeves’ Penguin will be getting a solo series on the platform in the near future. The news comes as a pleasant surprise, especially since we know that Reeves is already executive producing another spin-off series focusing on the GCPD; with Jeffrey Wright reprising his movie role as James Gordon.
Now, Deadline reports that HBO has approached Colin Farrell to reprise his role from the movie, but no deal has been finalized as of yet, although we’re hopeful that a deal will be struck very soon. Colin Farrell is going to appear as Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin in The Batman as a secondary villain, with the actor himself admitting that his role is quite small. Now, it seems that Reeves is just introducing the villain to his cinematic universe and that he certainly has plans for the character in the future. As we know, the main villain of The Batman is going to be the Riddler, as played by Paul Dano.
The Penguin-centered show is going to explore the villain’s origins within Reeves’ cinematic universe and will show us his rise in Gotham City; the show will be written and directed in a Scarface-like fashion, as we’ve been told.
Until then, the first part of Reeves’ grand idea is going to be The Batman, slated to hit theaters globally on March 4, 2022, and there’s no doubt that the future of all of these shows is going to depend on the success of the movie, but seeing how Reeves is ambitious about his future projects, and knowing his directorial quality, we’re quite hopeful that we’ll have a proper Batman-themed cinematic universe on our hands before the end of 2022.
