Could Apple Really Make a Smart Robot in the Near Future?

The sci-fi film Ex Machina tells the story of a humanoid robot, Ava, who seems more intelligent than she originally appears. Furthermore, one particular comment made by its director raises the intriguing question: could Apple soon make a robot like the one that stars in the film?

Our curiosity was certainly piqued when we learned that Ex Machina director Alex Garland, in explaining that the movie is set “ten minutes from now”, clarified that “if somebody like Google or Apple announced tomorrow that they had made Ava, we would all be surprised, but we wouldn’t be that surprised”.

It’s certainly fair to say that Siri, the virtual personal assistant present in all new iOS devices, would make a good basis for a humanoid robot’s brain. But is Apple constructing such a robot soon really as plausible as Garland reckons?
