Although a lot of developers may not take it into consideration, and a lot of users may not admit it, there is one glaring issue when it comes to playing games on your iPhone. It comes as a combination between screen-size and control placement within titles.
Whenever you’re required to use a control scheme that features an analog stick or face buttons that are actually integrated into the screen, it forces you to leave your fingers physically on top of the play field. And that creates a problem if you’re trying to play a game that needs you to focus on smaller details. It can be difficult to maneuver a title when you’ve got your fingers awkwardly placed in your line of sight.
The development company Canopy is aiming to solve this issue by releasing a specialized multi-touch and completely capacitive case for use with your device. The “Sensus Case” envelops your device with a thin layer of production and while it does look sleek and modern, it offers much more than initially meets the eye. There is a technology built into the Sensus that allows you to physically control your device by tapping the back against the case. This will allow you to play games by moving your fingers behind the screen, giving you a full view of the title you’re playing without obstructing your line of sight.
And it’s not just useful for games either. The Sensus works with anything, and can help solve your woes whenever you’re trying to “see something” as you move it. Maps is a good example, allowing you to pinch, zoom, and twist, all without obstructing the map you’re looking at. It takes a little getting used to, since you’re essentially touching behind the screen to operate it, but Canopy is promising great accuracy and fluid motion when the device comes to fruition.
The Sensus is not available in stores at the moment and is still in development, but is nevertheless an exciting piece of technology and something you should keep an eye on. The only two issues with the case at the moment are a “large” price point at a rumored USD $59.99 per unit, and the fact that the case only works with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It makes use of the “now old” 30-pin connector, meaning that it will not be compatible with the new lightning connector featured in the iPhone 5. However, that doesn’t mean that Canopy won’t release an iPhone 5 version soon.
