Courtney Barnett: Next Album Could Be “Just Me and a Piano”

Songs like “Pedestrian At Best” have attracted great acclaim for breakthrough indie rock star Courtney Barnett – but she says that her next album will be darker than what we might expect.

Barnett, who will shortly finish touring her debut album Sometimes I Sit And Think And Sometimes I Just Sit, told NME that she has “half-written” the follow-up, adding: “I’ve been writing on piano a lot. It’s darker and more melancholy, probably as a reflection on politics.”

As for whether her backing band will appear on the new album, she admitted: “I don’t know. It could just be an album with me and a piano, so who knows? If I knew how the album was going to sound so far in advance, I wouldn’t bother recording it. But I love those guys, they’re the greatest musicians.”

The labels that Barnett has previously released music on include Third Man Records. This label was founded in 2001 by renowned guitarist Jack White, who features in the new issue of AppleMagazine for a special reason. You’ll have to subscribe via our free iOS app to find out what that reason is…
