Cowboy Bebop is a well known title among anime fans. It is one of the most famous and best anime series ever. It was originally released back in 1998 to practically universal acclaim, with fans and critics praising its movie-quality animation, the catchy, jazz and blues-inspired soundtrack, and the unique blend of comedy, action and often melancholic and deeply affecting stories. The anime itself was set in the near-future, where humanity has abandoned the planet Earth as a result of a catastrophic accident and now lives on various colonies spread throughout the solar system. It was focused on the story of a group of incredibly skilled but unlucky bounty hunters who kept finding themselves crossing paths with petty criminals, escaped laboratory experiments, organized crime syndicates and various other enemies.
Now, Cowboy Bebop has long resisted being rebooted but Netflix is currently wrapping up the production of the first season of a live-action remake of the famous anime and on October 27, 2021, we finally got our first trailer.
The live-action Cowboy Bebop will see Star Trek Beyond and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay‘s John Cho as Spike Spiegel, a constantly hungry martial artist whose laid-back attitude serves as a mask for a painful and violent past which is set to be revealed through the show. Spike will be getting a new partner in the series, a former cop-turned-bounty hunter whose name is Jet Black, and who will be played by actor Mustafa Shakir. Shakir is known for his role of the Bushmaster in the second season of Netflix’s Luke Cage series, so he’s a relatively known name. The two of them will have to form a reluctant partnership with the opportunistic but quite talented Faye Valentine, who will be portrayed by the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom alum Daniella Pineda.
André Nemec, who had previously worked on Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Hulu’s High Fidelity adaptation, will serve as the new show’s executive producer and showrunner, with Shinichiro Watanabe, who directed the original anime series, returning to the series as a creative consultant. Yoko Kanno, the composer who created the anime series’ iconic soundtrack, also penned the score for the new series.
There’s much to look forward in Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, which will premiere on the platform on November 19, 2021.
