This one is for all you Dreamcast fans out there. The popular Sega console may be dead, but its memory will live on with the re-release of one of its most iconic games, Crazy Taxi. Sega announced today that they will be porting an iOS-friendly version of the action-packed “racer” sometime later this month (October). This is great news for Sega and Dreamcast fans, as it suggests that the company might be willing to port some of its other hit console titles for use on iDevices.
For anyone unfamiliar, Crazy Taxi was a popular “time racer” that was originally released with the Sega Dreamcast game console. The premise had you taking on the role of a crazy taxi driver that is interested in getting his or her passengers across a sprawling metropolis in as timely a manner as possible. However, timely didn’t suggest safe, and you would find yourself swerving through thick traffic and blasting through a variety of obstacles like boxes, carts, and signs. The game never gave a specific route, but instead suggested the “best way” to get a customer to their destination.
Everything was time-based, and the more fares you completed in a given time limit, the higher your score was. You could also unlock new cars and drivers by performing a variety of tasks. It was easily one of the most exciting titles to ever port for console, and although many may have called it a casual game, it was a riot nonetheless.
From the attached trailer, you can see gameplay footage, which looks very similar to the original title. It’s hard to really capture much from the trailer, considering it’s only ten seconds long, but from what I can see, it looks pretty much unchanged from the original. There is no word on whether or not there will be updated graphics or new content. Although, the quick song clip that plays during the preview is an original, The Offspring cut All I Want that was featured in the Dreamcast version. This suggests that the game will contain the original soundtrack.
In my honest opinion I don’t really see any need for developers to change anything from the way the original title operated. The game was so fun and casual that it should seamlessly carry over onto an iOS platform. We will be sure to keep an eye out for any more information regarding this anticipated release, including pricing information and a solid release date.
