Crowd Reporting Now Available in Weather Underground App for iPhone and iPod touch

Weather Underground, the world’s first online weather service, announced today the launch of a new crowd reporting feature in its updated app for iPhone. Users of the app can now verify the published conditions by reporting cloud cover and sky conditions personally observed within a ten mile radius of their location.

Weather Underground’s weather reporting and forecasting is already powered by a community of over 30,000 users contributing live weather data from their backyards through personal weather stations. The new crowd-reporting feature provides data that station hardware cannot detect, such as cloud cover and different types of precipitation. “Now customers can be a part of the community and help others by confirming or correcting the conditions reported by the stations,” said Allan Hui, Vice President of Product at Weather Underground.

App users will be able to view recently submitted crowd reports as a plotted data layer on the app’s interactive weather map — known as WunderMap(TM). The map also provides users with access to Weather Underground’s network of 30,000 personal weather stations, custom forecasts generated from each station, and thousands of webcams across the globe.

“Combining crowd-sourced data from weather stations with human observations will help Weather Underground establish a new level of accuracy within weather reporting,” said Alan Steremberg, President and Co-founder of Weather Underground. “We’ve added the power of the crowd to the world’s largest network of weather stations, making this the ultimate community-based weather app.”

Additional New Features Include:

  • User Interface redesigned and optimized for iOS 7
  • Landscape mode capability
  • Interactive graphs displaying data trends, including history and forecasts
  • Increased number of webcams, including time-lapse videos
  • Access to weather related videos
